How to Get a Discount on Apple Products (2026): Every Route Compared
Education pricing saves about 10%. Apple's refurbished store saves about 15%. Retail sales on AirPods hit 29%. Here is every legitimate route, what each actually saves, and the catch attached to it.

There are seven legitimate ways to pay less for Apple hardware in 2026: education pricing (~10% off), Apple Certified Refurbished (~15% off), trade-in, third-party retailer sales (up to 29% on AirPods), carrier deals, buying in a no-sales-tax state, and paying a retailer that passes on its own savings. None of them stack the way people assume, and the best route depends entirely on which device you're buying.
Below is what each one actually saves, verified against Apple's own pricing in August 2026 — including the routes that beat what we offer, because pretending otherwise would be useless to you.
Which Apple discount saves the most?
Apple Certified Refurbished is the biggest reliable discount at roughly 15% off, available to everyone with no eligibility requirements. Education pricing saves about 10% but is limited to verified students and staff. Third-party retailer sales go deeper — up to 29% — but only on specific categories at specific times.
| Route | Typical saving | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Refurbished | ~15% (up to 21.6% seen) | Used stock, fixed configs, sells out. Mac batteries are not guaranteed new. |
| Education Store | ~10% (up to $200 off a Mac) | UNiDAYS verification required. No iPhone discount. 1 Mac + 2 iPads per year. |
| Retailer sale — AirPods | 22–29% | Event-driven. You wait for it. |
| Retailer sale — MacBook | 9–26% | Sporadic; rarely the config you want. |
| Retailer sale — iPad | 8–15% | Older models discount hardest. |
| Retailer sale — iPhone | ~0% | Current-gen iPhones essentially never drop in price. |
| Trade-in | Varies (up to $720) | Private sale usually beats it. Values fall before launches. |
| Carrier "free iPhone" | Headline: full value | Often costs more once the required plan is priced in. |
| No-sales-tax state | 0% vs up to ~11% | Only if you live there. Tax is owed regardless. |
| Paying with crypto here | 5% off, sealed new stock | You need to already hold crypto. |
How much does the Apple education discount actually save?
Apple's Education Store takes roughly 10% off Macs and iPads — up to $200 off a Mac, $100 off an iPad and $130 off an Apple Watch. It does not discount iPhones at all.
Two things changed recently that most guides haven't caught up with. Since 8 May 2026, Apple requires UNiDAYS verification in the US, Canada and Chile — a photo ID or school email, usually instant. And purchases are capped: one Mac and two iPads per year.
The 2026 Back to School promotion ran 16 July to 24 September 2026, adding a $150 gift card with a MacBook Pro or $100 with a MacBook Air, iPad Pro or iPad Air. That stacks with education pricing, which is the single best combination available — roughly 15–20% effective on a MacBook Air. It excludes iPhones, desktop Macs and the entry iPad.
Parents buying for a student qualify. If you're not in education, none of this is available to you, which is where the next option matters.
Is Apple refurbished worth it?
Yes, for most buyers. Apple Certified Refurbished units come with the same one-year warranty as new, are AppleCare+ eligible, and typically cost about 15% less. Checked against apple.com in August 2026: a 14-inch MacBook Pro M5 at $1,699 versus $1,999 new — exactly 15% off. A refurbished Studio Display was $1,489 against $1,899, a 21.6% discount.
Now the correction almost every article on this topic gets wrong, and the one thing worth knowing before you buy:
Refurbished iPhones and iPads get a new battery and a new outer shell. Refurbished Macs do not. Apple does not guarantee either on a Mac. You may receive a machine with meaningful battery cycles already used. If a Mac's refurb listing matters to you, factor a possible battery replacement into the 15% you're saving.
The other real limitation is inventory. Refurbished stock is whatever Apple happens to have — fixed configurations, rotating availability, and popular models disappear. You cannot configure it, and you may wait weeks for the spec you want.
Do Apple discounts stack?
Almost never. Education pricing does not combine with refurbished stock. Retailer sale prices do not combine with Apple's own promotions. The one genuine stack is education pricing plus the Back to School gift card, because the gift card is a separate promotion rather than a price reduction.
Ignore any site advertising an "Apple promo code" or "30% off Apple coupon". Apple does not issue public discount codes. Those pages are affiliate noise.
Is trading in your old device worth it?
Apple's trade-in values are real but conservative. As of 6 August 2026, an iPhone 16 Pro Max was valued at up to $720, a MacBook Pro around $685–690, and a MacBook Air $485–520.
Selling privately usually beats trade-in once the gap exceeds roughly $80. Swappa charges about 3% versus eBay's ~13.25%, so the platform you pick matters as much as the buyer.
The timing detail nobody mentions: trade-in values fall before a launch, not after. A SellCell study published 25 August 2026 found that 92.6% of iPhone 17 trade-in values dropped in the ten days between Apple's announcement and the launch — an average of $36.46 per device, with the iPhone 16 Plus 512GB falling from $695 to $566. If you're trading in, do it before the keynote, not after.
Are carrier deals actually free?
No. Carrier "free iPhone with trade-in" offers pay out as bill credits spread over 24 to 36 months, and require you to stay on a qualifying high-tier plan for the entire term. Leave early and you forfeit the remaining credits.
One worked example: an AT&T offer requiring a plan from $75.99/month over 36 months comes to $2,735 in plan payments plus a $35 activation fee — considerably more than the phone's retail price. The phone is only "free" if you were going to buy that exact plan anyway.
Which device should you buy where?
The right route changes completely by category:
iPhone. Nothing discounts a current-generation iPhone. Apple offers gift cards rather than price cuts — Black Friday 2025 brought $75 with an iPhone 16, not $75 off. Retailers hold the line too. This is the one category where a straightforward percentage off is hard to find anywhere.
AirPods. Wait for a sale, always. AirPods Pro 3 hit $179 against a $249 list price in August 2026 — 28.9% off and an all-time low. No other route comes close.
MacBook. Refurbished if you'll accept used, education if you qualify, retailer sale if you can wait. Black Friday 2025 saw a MacBook Air M4 at $738, about 26% off.
iPad. Retailer discounts of $100–150 are routine on all but the newest model.
Desktop Macs. Thin discounting everywhere. Refurbished is usually the only meaningful saving.
Where does paying with crypto fit?
We take 5% off for paying in crypto, on brand-new sealed stock with Apple's standard warranty. Being straight with you about where that ranks: refurbished beats it, education pricing beats it, and a well-timed AirPods sale beats it by a lot.
Where it wins is narrower but real. It applies to current-generation iPhones, which nothing else discounts — an iPhone 17 Pro at $899 or the 17 Pro Max at $1,099. It needs no eligibility check, so it works if you're not a student. The stock is new and sealed rather than refurbished. And it's available today rather than whenever the next sale lands.
The discount isn't goodwill — it's arithmetic. Card payments cost a merchant roughly 2.3% plus chargeback exposure; crypto payments cost less and can't be reversed. We explain the full economics in why paying with crypto costs less.
If you already hold crypto, the practical comparison is against selling it for dollars first — exchange fees, a withdrawal hold, then paying retail. Paying direct skips all three. Browse the Mac range, iPhones or the full store, and see how to buy for the two-minute version.
One thing to plan for if you're in the US, UK, Canada or Australia: spending crypto is a disposal, and disposals are taxable. That's true wherever you spend it, not just here. We cover it in do you pay tax when you buy with crypto.
What about sales tax?
Five US states charge no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Elsewhere, combined state and local rates run from near zero to over 11%. On a $1,000 purchase that's the difference between paying $1,000 and about $1,110 — larger than most of the discounts on this page.
Back-to-school tax holidays exist in several states, but the eligible price caps are usually set well below Mac and iPhone price points, so they rarely help on the expensive items.
The short version
Student or staff? Education pricing plus the Back to School window, every time. Happy with used? Refurbished at ~15%. Buying AirPods or an iPad? Wait for a retailer sale. Buying a current iPhone, or you want new and sealed without waiting or qualifying for anything? That's the narrow gap where paying in crypto at 5% off is the better deal.
Still deciding whether to buy now at all? Timing matters more than any of these percentages — see when Apple products actually go on sale.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best way to get a discount on Apple products?
Apple Certified Refurbished is the largest discount available to everyone, at roughly 15% off with a full one-year warranty. Students and staff do better with education pricing at about 10%, which stacks with Apple's Back to School gift card promotion. For AirPods and iPads, third-party retailer sales go deeper than either — up to 29% off AirPods.
How much is the Apple student discount?
About 10% off Macs and iPads — up to $200 off a Mac, $100 off an iPad and $130 off an Apple Watch. iPhones are excluded. Since 8 May 2026 Apple requires UNiDAYS verification in the US, Canada and Chile, and limits purchases to one Mac and two iPads per year.
Do refurbished Macs come with a new battery?
No. Apple replaces the battery and outer shell on refurbished iPhones and iPads, but does not guarantee either on refurbished Macs. A refurbished Mac may arrive with meaningful battery cycles already used, which is worth weighing against the roughly 15% saving.
Do Apple discounts stack?
Almost never. Education pricing doesn't apply to refurbished stock, and retailer sale prices don't combine with Apple promotions. The one real exception is education pricing plus the Back to School gift card, because the gift card is a separate promotion rather than a price cut.
When are Apple trade-in values highest?
Before a product announcement. A SellCell study from August 2026 found 92.6% of iPhone 17 trade-in values fell in the ten days between Apple's announcement and launch, by an average of $36.46 per device. Trade in ahead of the keynote, not after it.
Is it cheaper to buy Apple products with Bitcoin?
It can be. We take 5% off for crypto payment on new sealed stock. That's less than Apple's refurbished discount (~15%) or education pricing (~10%), but it applies to current-generation iPhones that nothing else discounts, requires no eligibility check, and doesn't involve waiting for a sale or accepting a used device.
