iPhone 18 Pro vs 17 Pro: What Actually Changed (2026)

The iPhone 18 Pro went on sale on 18 September 2026, and for once the spec sheet tells the story better than the keynote did. Three things genuinely improved. Five things did not move at all. And the price went up by more than the headline $100 as soon as you want storage above 512GB.

Here is the version with receipts: Apple's own published figures, teardown numbers, and independent test results — including the results that make the new phone look bad.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth upgrading from a 17 Pro?

For most 17 Pro owners, no. The three real gains are sustained performance, the variable-aperture main camera, and — on the Pro Max only — roughly 10% more battery. If you shoot stills seriously, or you game long enough to hit thermal throttling, those are worth money. If you don't, you are paying $100 to $500 extra for a phone with the same display, the same 12GB of RAM, the same telephoto lens and the same front camera.

From an iPhone 15 Pro or older it is a different question entirely, because you collect two or three generations of change in one go. The phone that is hardest to justify replacing is the one Apple sold you twelve months ago.

The one design change you will notice daily is the smaller Dynamic Island. Apple moved the Face ID infrared camera under the panel in the top-left corner, using a lower-density pixel pattern that lets infrared through, and the island now holds three Live Activities instead of two.

The price rise is not $100 — it depends where you buy in the range

MacRumors traced the increase to the industry-wide DRAM shortage rather than to anything Apple added. AppleInsider reports Apple's contracted memory price moving from roughly $1.50 per Gb to around $2.00 per Gb from 2027, with forecast demand running about 13.6% ahead of supply that year and no relief expected before 2028.

The practical read: the storage tier you talk yourself out of this year is unlikely to be cheaper next year. If you habitually fill a phone, buy up now rather than in 2027.

Outside the US the arithmetic is worse. The 256GB iPhone 18 Pro is €1,449 in Germany, €1,479 in France and £1,199 in the UK. Those are VAT-inclusive, so the gap against the $1,199 US price is smaller than it looks — strip 19% German VAT and you are at about €1,218 — but in local currency Germany absorbed +€150 at the entry tier and +€650 on the Pro Max 2TB.

What the benchmarks show, and what you will feel

The chip gain is real and measurable. Geekbench 7 runs published in review coverage put the 18 Pro at 4,027 single-core and 11,540 multi-core against 3,258 and 9,167 for the 17 Pro — about 24% and 26%. Tom's Guide measured 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited at 62 fps on the 18 Pro, up a third, and Geekbench AI Neural Engine scores 41–48% higher.

Battery is messier. On Tom's Guide's 5G web-browsing test at 150 nits, the 18 Pro Max averaged 18 hours 27 minutes against the 17 Pro Max's 17:54, and the 18 Pro ran 16:17 against 15:17. That is a genuine but modest gain from a cell that grew 11.7% on the Pro Max and 1.7% on the Pro, according to Apple's own EU energy labels.

Then there is the number Apple did not put on a slide: in Dave2D's Genshin Impact loop at 600 nits, the iPhone 18 Pro lasted eleven minutes less than the 17 Pro, and the 18 Pro Max managed only 23 minutes more than its predecessor. Sustained load eats the gain. If your heaviest use is gaming, do not buy this phone for the battery.

Charging improved on paper and in testing — the 18 Pro hit 53% in 15 minutes — but the Pro Max is slower than the smaller Pro at 44%, and both now want a 60W-capable adapter with Adjustable Voltage Supply. Apple still ships a cable and no brick.

Variable aperture: useful, but not where you would expect

The main camera now stops down mechanically through ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 and ƒ/4.0 using six laser-cut blades, and Apple exposed the full range to developers through an API. Apple claims around 50% better low-light performance at ƒ/1.48.

PetaPixel's optical testing found the opposite of the obvious assumption: sharpness peaks at ƒ/2.8, then ƒ/1.8, then ƒ/4.0, with ƒ/1.48 the softest setting and visible edge degradation wide open. That is normal lens behaviour, and it means the feature's value is control — shallow depth of field when you want it, ƒ/4.0 for daylight long exposures and cleaner sun stars — rather than a free jump in image quality.

The sensor itself did not get bigger. All three rear cameras carry exactly the same pixel pitches as the 17 Pro: 2.44µm quad-pixel on the main, 1.4µm on the ultra wide and telephoto.

Five things that did not change

• 12GB of RAM. Confirmed through Xcode 27, identical to the 17 Pro, in the year Apple raised prices citing memory costs.
• The display. Same 6.3″ and 6.9″ panels, same 460 ppi, same 1000/1600/3000-nit brightness figures, same 120Hz ProMotion, same anti-reflective coating.
• The telephoto. 4× at 100mm, 8× optical-quality at 200mm, 16× optical-quality range. The spec line is word-for-word the same as last year.
• The front camera. 18MP Center Stage at ƒ/1.9.
• The body. 150.0 × 71.9 × 8.75mm and 163.4 × 78.0 × 8.75mm, to the tenth of a millimetre.

And three that got worse

• Weight. The Pro Max gained 16 grams, up to 249g. On a phone people already call heavy, that is noticeable.
• The charger you need. Fast charging moved from a 40W adapter to a 60W-capable one with Adjustable Voltage Supply, and MagSafe from 30W to 35W. Neither is in the box.
• The US Pro Max modem. Apple's C2 modem went into the iPhone 18 Pro globally and into the Pro Max everywhere except the United States, where teardowns by TechInsights found Qualcomm's Snapdragon X80 — the same part as last year. Apple has not explained the split.

One more quirk worth knowing before you buy accessories: because the Face ID infrared camera now sits under the display, matte and etched full-coverage screen protectors scatter the IR pattern and break Face ID. Clear protectors are fine. Apple has not acknowledged it.

Who should upgrade

• Buy the 18 Pro if you are on an iPhone 15 Pro or older, if you shoot stills where aperture control matters, or if you record long video and keep hitting thermal limits.
• Buy the 18 Pro Max if battery is the deciding factor — 45 rated hours of video and a 5,391mAh cell is the largest battery Apple has shipped in a phone, and it is the one model where the generational gain is real.
• Keep your 17 Pro. Nothing here is worth $1,199 on top of a phone that shares its screen, memory, telephoto and chassis. iOS 27 gave the older phone most of what feels new.
• Buy the previous generation deliberately. Apple discontinued the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max on 9 September, which is exactly when a still-current phone becomes good value.
