Does Apple's Warranty Work If You Don't Buy From Apple?

Yes. Apple's One-Year Limited Warranty covers the device, not the shop. It runs for one year from the date of original retail purchase by the end user, and Apple's own terms make no mention of where you bought it. A sealed device bought from a reseller carries the same coverage as one bought in an Apple Store.

That's the short answer, and it's the one most people are looking for. The parts worth reading are the three things that can actually go wrong — none of which is "you didn't buy it from Apple".

What Apple's warranty actually says

Apple's published warranty wording is specific: it covers "the Apple-branded hardware product… against defects in materials and workmanship… for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser."

Two things follow from that sentence. The clock starts at original retail purchase, and the obligation sits with Apple. No reseller can extend it, shorten it, or void it.

Proof of purchase is conditional rather than mandatory — Apple "may require that you furnish proof of purchase details". In practice a service centre works from the serial number, and the receipt matters mainly for AppleCare+ enrolment or a dispute.

Is Apple's warranty valid in any country?

This is the nuance that most articles get wrong, and it splits by product.

Apple's US warranty document carries an explicit restriction: "Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, HomePod, and Apple Vision Pro to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the device."

Mac is not on that list. In practice that makes Mac warranty service effectively international, while an iPhone bought in one country may need to go back to that country for warranty work. If you're buying a phone across a border, that's the risk to weigh — not the validity of the warranty itself.

Note also that Apple's EMEA documentation uses the broader wording, applying the restriction to hardware products generally. Which document governs depends on where the device was originally sold, so if this matters to your purchase, ask the seller which region's stock they're shipping.

How do I check a device's warranty before I pay?

Use Apple's own tool at checkcoverage.apple.com and enter the serial number. Any legitimate seller will give you the serial on request. What you're looking for:

An estimated purchase date that hasn't happened yet, or a prompt to activate the device. That's what a genuinely new, unactivated unit looks like.

A purchase date already in the past. This is the single most common real problem with reseller stock — the warranty clock started when the reseller or a previous buyer registered it, so you get less than a full year. It's exactly the complaint in a July 2026 Reddit thread titled "sold me a MacBook Pro as 'brand new', but Apple says the warranty is already nearly expired". Checking the serial first is a two-minute step that prevents it entirely.

An activation lock. Apple's warranty terms exclude a product where you "cannot prove in any way that you are the authorized user". A locked device is somebody else's device.

Can I add AppleCare+ to a device bought elsewhere?

Usually yes, but the window is short. AppleCare+ must be added within 60 days of purchase, and Apple will verify the device — either a remote diagnostic or an in-store inspection. The longer AppleCare Protection Plan has a 12-month window on eligible products.

One honest caveat: Apple's published text doesn't spell out eligibility for units bought from non-authorised sellers. Secondary sources say authorised-reseller purchases enrol cleanly. If AppleCare+ is essential to you, buy it early and confirm enrolment rather than assuming.

What are my rights if the device is faulty?

Here's the part that genuinely matters more than the Apple warranty, and almost nobody mentions it.

Your statutory rights run against the seller, not Apple. In the EU, Directive 2019/771 gives you a minimum two-year guarantee from delivery, with the burden of proof reversed for at least the first year. In the UK, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives a 30-day short-term right to reject for a full refund, and a defect appearing within six months is presumed to have been present at delivery. In Australia, consumer guarantees aren't capped by the manufacturer's warranty at all — the ACCC extracted a court-enforceable undertaking from Apple after it told customers otherwise.

Those rights are excellent. They are also only as good as the seller's willingness and reachability. If a retailer is offshore, anonymous, or disappears, a two-year EU guarantee is a piece of paper. This — not the Apple warranty — is the actual risk of buying from a small retailer.

What voids the warranty?

Apple's exclusions are narrow and mostly obvious: accidental damage, unauthorised modification or service, use outside Apple's published guidelines, cosmetic damage, and consumable parts. Two are worth calling out because they bear on second-hand and grey-market stock:

Coverage is void if the serial number has been removed or defaced, and void if Apple learns the product is stolen or you can't disable a security lock and can't otherwise prove you're the authorised user.

Note also what a repair earns you: replacement parts carry the remainder of the original warranty or 90 days from the repair, whichever is longer.

What about regional model differences?

This is real for phones, largely irrelevant for Macs. Different regions get different iPhone model numbers with different cellular band support — the international iPhone 16 SKU (A3287) ships in around 186 countries but omits 5G bands n14, n29 and n71, and all mmWave. If you're buying a phone that will live on a US carrier, the model number matters.

Macs, iPads, Apple Watches and AirPods don't carry that complication in any meaningful way. The practical difference is the plug on the charger.
